Treatment Protocol
Crop wash with warm sodium bicarbonate solution. Treat underlying infection. Syringe feed if needed.
Recommended Medications
For crop wash
Dosage: Warm saline solution: 1/4 tsp per 200ml warm water for crop wash
Duration: 1-3 sessions as needed
If candida suspected
Dosage: 300,000 IU/kg body weight, orally three times daily
Duration: 7-14 days
If bacterial/protozoal cause
Dosage: 1 teaspoon per quart of drinking water (20% powder)
Duration: 5-7 days
After crop wash to restore flora
Dosage: Per product instructions, typically once daily
Duration: 7-14 days (during and after antibiotic treatment)
Home Care
- +Crop wash: warm (38°C) sodium bicarbonate solution via syringe/tube
- +Withhold food until crop empties, then small frequent feedings
- +Keep warm at 30-32°C
- +Gentle crop massage may help motility
When to See a Vet
If crop wash does not work, if bird is severely debilitated, or if foreign body is suspected.
